Welcome to the Chelmsford Marquetry Group website
The pictures and articles that you will see on our website are created by ordinary people using a craft knife, glue, a wide range of wood veneers and varying levels of skill. Many of our Club Members have been creating beautiful pieces for many years. This ancient craft can be easily learnt and developed with guidance from our experienced Marquetarians.
Our Patron is Lord Petre of Ingatestone Hall, Lord Lieutenant of Essex (2002 – present)
Lord Petre at the opening of the 2010 National here at Chelmsford, receiving a tray with his coat of arms created by Alan Townsend.
Quote from Lord Petre J.P.
I had my first “close encounter” with the art of marquetry when the Chelmsford Group began to mount occasional exhibitions for visitors to my historic house, Ingatestone Hall. I was quite entranced by the magical effects achieved.
I subsequently had the honour of becoming Patron of the Group and so had the opportunity to visit their regular cutting meetings and discover how these magical effects are produced. As a result, my admiration for the skill and patient applicant of the artists increased even more.
Thank you for visiting our website. Please take a look around, learn more about marquetry, and find out how you can join in on the fun!
